The Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante holds the distinction of being Brazil's first domestically designed and mass-produced aircraft, launching Embraer into the global aerospace industry when it entered service in 1973. Developed initially for the Brazilian Air Force as a military transport and patrol aircraft, the twin-turboprop quickly found a civilian niche as a rugged 15-21 seat regional airliner and cargo hauler capable of operating from short, unpaved runways across Latin America, Africa, and remote regions worldwide. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34 engines producing 750 shaft horsepower each, the Bandeirante cruises at around 215 knots with a range of approximately 1,200 nautical miles, making it ideal for thin routes and freight operations where larger aircraft are uneconomical. Over 500 units were built between 1968 and 1990, serving in both military and civilian roles across more than 35 countries. The type earned a reputation for reliability and low operating costs in challenging environments, from the Amazon basin to the Australian outback. While most passenger variants have been retired from scheduled airline service, the Bandeirante remains active in cargo, charter, and specialized operations where its combination of payload capacity, short-field performance, and twin-engine redundancy continues to prove valuable.
