The Bombardier CRJ100 launched the regional jet revolution in 1992, becoming the first purpose-built 50-seat jet to challenge turboprop dominance on short-haul routes. Derived from Bombardier's Challenger business jet, the CRJ100 stretched the fuselage to accommodate five-abreast seating and introduced the distinctive T-tail and aft-mounted General Electric CF34 turbofans that would define the entire CRJ family. Its ability to cruise at 41,000 feet and match mainline jet speeds while operating from shorter runways transformed regional airline economics across North America and Europe. The type entered service with Lufthansa CityLine and quickly became the template for competitors like the Embraer ERJ family. Though production ended in 2006 after roughly 226 units as Bombardier shifted focus to the larger CRJ200, CRJ700, and CRJ900 variants, the CRJ100 proved the viability of small jets on thin routes previously served only by 30-seat turboprops. Today the type operates primarily in charter, cargo, and corporate shuttle roles, having been largely retired from scheduled passenger service as airlines upgraded to newer, more efficient regional jets.
