The Boeing 777-200 was the world's first widebody twinjet certified for extended-range overwater operations at entry into service in 1995, fundamentally reshaping long-haul aviation economics by eliminating the need for three- and four-engine aircraft on many routes. Launched with United Airlines and developed in close collaboration with eight major carriers, the 777 introduced fly-by-wire to Boeing's commercial fleet and became the first airliner designed entirely on computer workstations. Its GE90, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines were the largest-diameter turbofans ever hung on a commercial aircraft at the time, each producing up to 90,000 pounds of thrust. The baseline 777-200 seats 305-440 passengers in typical configurations and offers a range of approximately 5,240 nautical miles, making it ideal for high-density domestic trunk routes and medium-haul international services. While the stretched 777-300 and long-range 777-200ER variants followed, the original 777-200 established the type's reputation for dispatch reliability above 99 percent and operational flexibility that allowed airlines to right-size capacity on routes previously requiring 747s or DC-10s. The aircraft cruises at Mach 0.84 at altitudes up to 43,100 feet, with a maximum operating speed of 330 knots IAS or Mach 0.89.
