Airbus Helicopters H125/As350

Single Turboshaft

The Airbus Helicopters AS350 Écureuil (marketed as AStar in North America) is the world's most successful single-engine turbine helicopter, with over 6,000 delivered since 1977. Known for exceptional high-altitude performance, an AS350 B3 set the absolute helicopter altitude record in 2005 by landing on the summit of Mount Everest at 29,029 feet, a feat that remains unmatched by any other production rotorcraft. The type's combination of a powerful Arriel turboshaft engine, lightweight Starflex rotor head, and spacious cabin made it the go-to platform for law enforcement, emergency medical services, utility work, and tourism operations worldwide. Its ability to operate in hot-and-high conditions where most helicopters struggle, combined with relatively low operating costs and excellent visibility from the cockpit, cemented its dominance in the light utility segment. The AS350 family includes variants from the original B model through the current H125 (formerly AS350 B3e), all sharing the same rugged airframe and proven systems. Law enforcement agencies favor the type for its speed, endurance, and stable platform for observation and tactical operations, while air medical operators value the rear clamshell doors and cabin volume that accommodate a stretcher and two medical crew. The helicopter's VNE of 155 knots and service ceiling above 20,000 feet give it performance margins that exceed most competitors in its weight class. SkyMeter has tracked 2,451 flights across 743 airframes and 266 operators, with AIR METHODS LLC the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
