About the Aero Vodochody L-29 Delfin

The Aero L-29 Delfín was the Soviet bloc's standard jet trainer throughout the 1960s and 1970s, becoming the most-produced jet trainer in history with over 3,600 built. Designed by Czechoslovakia's Aero Vodochody and first flown in 1959, it won a Warsaw Pact competition to replace piston trainers across Eastern Europe, beating Soviet and Polish rivals. The straight-winged, single-engine design prioritized simplicity and ruggedness over performance: its Motorlet M-701 turbojet produced just 1,960 pounds of thrust, giving it a modest top speed around 407 knots but exceptional reliability on austere airfields.
