The Fouga CM.170 Magister holds the distinction of being the world's first purpose-built jet trainer to enter widespread service, flying its maiden flight in 1952 and entering French Air Force service in 1956. Designed by Établissements Fouga with its distinctive V-tail and side-by-side seating, the Magister became the standard jet trainer for France and was exported to over 20 air forces worldwide, with more than 900 aircraft produced through 1969.
