The Vultee BT-13 Valiant was the most widely produced American basic trainer of World War II, with over 11,500 built between 1940 and 1944. Nicknamed the "Vibrator" by cadets for its characteristic engine rumble, the BT-13 served as the intermediate step between primary trainers like the Stearman and advanced combat aircraft, teaching tens of thousands of Army Air Forces pilots the fundamentals of instrument flying, formation work, and night operations. Its all-metal construction, enclosed canopy, two-way radio, and retractable landing gear made it far more representative of frontline fighters and bombers than the fabric-covered biplanes that preceded it in the training pipeline. Powered by a 450-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial engine, the Valiant was forgiving enough for student pilots yet demanding enough to weed out those unsuited for combat flying.
