Tecnam P2012 Traveller

Twin Piston

The Tecnam P2012 Traveller is an Italian-designed twin-engine piston commuter aircraft that entered service in 2019, purpose-built to replace aging fleets of Cessna 402s and similar light twins on short-haul regional routes. Manufactured by Costruzioni Aeronautiche Tecnam in Capua, Italy, the high-wing design seats up to eleven passengers and features modern Lycoming TEO-540 engines driving three-blade constant-speed propellers, delivering economical operation on routes under 300 nautical miles. The type has found particular favor with U.S. operators serving Essential Air Service communities, where its combination of low operating costs, good short-field performance, and pressurized cabin comfort make it ideal for connecting small airports to regional hubs. Cape Air became the launch customer and largest operator worldwide, deploying the Traveller across its extensive New England and Caribbean networks to replace its aging Cessna 402 fleet. The aircraft's operating envelope includes a maximum cruise speed of 194 knots, service ceiling of 20,000 feet, and range of approximately 600 nautical miles with full passenger load, modest figures that reflect its mission as a workhorse commuter rather than a speed demon. SkyMeter has tracked 11 flights across 3 airframes and 3 operators, with MAPES ROCKY A the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
