The Schempp-Hirth Arcus is a high-performance side-by-side two-seat self-launching sailplane built by the famous German glider manufacturer since 2006. Unlike traditional sailplanes that require a tow aircraft or winch launch, the Arcus features a retractable Rotax 505 two-stroke engine that allows pilots to take off independently and climb to soaring altitude before shutting down and retracting the powerplant for pure gliding flight. This self-launch capability makes it exceptionally versatile for cross-country soaring and training operations where tow infrastructure is limited. With a 20-meter wingspan and advanced laminar-flow airfoil design, the Arcus achieves a glide ratio exceeding 40:1 in pure sailplane mode, placing it among the elite of modern two-seat gliders. The side-by-side seating configuration is unusual in the sailplane world (most two-seaters use tandem seating) but offers superior communication between instructor and student or between cross-country soaring partners. The type has found favor with soaring clubs and private owners seeking the freedom of self-launch combined with world-class gliding performance.
