Pilatus Aircraft Pc-21

Single Turboprop

The Pilatus PC-21 is a Swiss-designed advanced turboprop trainer that has redefined military pilot instruction since its first flight in 2002. Built by Pilatus Aircraft in Stans, Switzerland, the PC-21 delivers jet-like performance and handling characteristics while retaining the fuel efficiency and lower operating costs of a turboprop, powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68B producing 1,600 shaft horsepower. Its stepped tandem cockpit, full glass avionics suite, and advanced simulation capabilities allow air forces to conduct nearly all phases of pilot training on a single platform, from basic through advanced tactical instruction. The PC-21 can sustain +8/-4g maneuvers and reach speeds up to 370 knots, performance that closely mimics modern fast jets and enables realistic combat maneuvering training without the expense of actual fighter aircraft. Its pressurized cockpit, Martin-Baker ejection seats, and sophisticated avionics including head-up displays and hands-on-throttle-and-stick controls provide trainees with an authentic fighter-jet environment. The Royal Australian Air Force, Swiss Air Force, French Air and Space Force, Royal Jordanian Air Force, and Singapore Air Force have all selected the PC-21 as their primary advanced trainer, replacing older jet trainers in several cases. The type's wing-mounted hardpoints allow weapons training with live ordnance, rockets, and gun pods, making it suitable for light attack and counter-insurgency roles in addition to its primary training mission. SkyMeter has tracked 899 flights across 140 airframes and 1 operators, with distinct routes observed.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
