MD Helicopters Md 600n

Single Rotorcraft

The MD Helicopters MD 600N is a five-seat light utility helicopter distinguished by its NOTAR (NO TAil Rotor) anti-torque system, which replaces the conventional tail rotor with a variable-pitch fan and directed thrust from the tail boom. Introduced in the mid-1990s as an evolution of the MD 500 series, the 600N was designed to eliminate tail rotor strikes and reduce noise while improving safety around ground personnel. Powered by a single Allison 250-C47M turboshaft engine producing 650 shaft horsepower, the aircraft achieves a maximum cruise speed of approximately 135 knots and a service ceiling near 16,000 feet, making it competitive with other light singles in its class. The NOTAR system, while innovative, added mechanical complexity and weight compared to traditional tail rotors, and the type never achieved the commercial success of its MD 500 predecessors. Production numbers remained modest, with the 600N finding roles in corporate transport, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and tourism operations, particularly in regions where its quiet operation and safety features were valued. The type's relatively high acquisition and maintenance costs limited widespread adoption, and MD Helicopters eventually shifted focus to military variants and the smaller MD 500 series. SkyMeter has tracked 28 flights across 9 airframes and 8 operators, with ROTORWORKS LLC the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
