Learjet (Bombardier) Learjet 70

Twin Jet

The Learjet 70 represents Bombardier's effort to modernize the iconic Learjet brand for the 21st century, entering service in 2013 as the smaller sibling in the 70/75 family. Built in Wichita, Kansas, the L70 replaced the aging Learjet 40/45 series with a clean-sheet design featuring a Garmin G5000 glass cockpit, canted winglets, and Honeywell TFE731-40BR engines that deliver exceptional fuel efficiency for the light jet category. With seating for up to eight passengers in a stand-up cabin and a maximum range of 2,060 nautical miles, the L70 carved out a niche in the owner-flown and fractional ownership markets where speed and operating economics matter more than cabin volume. The type can cruise at 465 knots and reach FL510, making it one of the fastest and highest-flying aircraft in its weight class. Despite its technical refinement, the Learjet 70 struggled commercially against established competitors like the Embraer Phenom 300 and Cessna Citation CJ4, leading Bombardier to announce the end of all Learjet production in February 2021 after delivering only 28 Learjet 70s worldwide. The type remains a rare sight on the ramp, prized by its small community of operators for the unmistakable Learjet handling characteristics and performance that made the brand legendary. SkyMeter has tracked 4 flights across 2 airframes and 2 operators over routes, with YOKOSAWA KENNETH EINO the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
