Single Piston

The Extra EA-300 is a German-built unlimited aerobatic monoplane that has dominated international competition aerobatics since its introduction in 1988. Designed by Walter Extra specifically for the demands of FAI-level competition, the EA-300 series features an all-composite airframe capable of sustaining +/-10G loads, making it one of the strongest light aircraft ever certified. Its distinctive low-wing configuration, bubble canopy, and symmetrical airfoil allow pilots to perform the same maneuvers inverted as upright, a critical capability for modern freestyle aerobatic sequences. Powered by a 300-horsepower Lycoming AEIO-540 engine driving a constant-speed propeller, the EA-300 achieves a roll rate exceeding 400 degrees per second and can climb vertically for extended periods. The type has been flown to victory at the World Aerobatic Championships multiple times and remains the aircraft of choice for Red Bull Air Race competitors and national aerobatic teams worldwide. Variants include the single-seat EA-300S, two-seat EA-300L trainer, and the EA-300SC with refined systems. With a never-exceed speed of 253 knots and a design that prioritizes control authority over speed, the EA-300 excels in the precision and freestyle programs that define unlimited aerobatics. Its relatively benign stall characteristics (59 knots landing configuration) and docile ground handling have also made it popular for advanced aerobatic training, though operating costs reflect its competition pedigree. SkyMeter has tracked 14 flights across 6 airframes and 4 operators, with SMOYER JOHN C, SMOYER PHYLLIS M the most frequently observed.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
