The Bombardier CRJ200 is the stretched, extended-range variant of the original Canadair Regional Jet family, introduced in 1995 as one of the first purpose-built 50-seat regional jets to challenge turboprop dominance on thin routes. Developed from the Challenger business jet lineage, the CRJ200 brought jet speed and passenger appeal to regional markets previously served by Dash 8s and Saab 340s, cruising at 0.81 Mach and reaching altitudes up to 41,000 feet, performance unmatched by competing turboprops. The type became the backbone of major regional carriers in North America through the 2000s, with over 1,000 units delivered before production ended in 2006. Its distinctive aft-mounted General Electric CF34-3B1 engines and T-tail configuration became synonymous with the regional jet revolution that reshaped short-haul air travel. Though largely retired from scheduled airline service due to scope clause restrictions and fuel efficiency concerns, the CRJ200 found a solid second life in corporate shuttle operations, charter work, and private ownership. The extended-range variant offers approximately 1,700 nautical miles of range at typical loads, making it viable for transcontinental positioning flights and nonstop regional missions that would require fuel stops in the standard CRJ100.
