The Beechcraft Skipper is a two-seat, light piston trainer introduced in 1979 as Beechcraft's answer to the Cessna 152 and Piper Tomahawk in the primary flight training market. Built at the company's Liberal, Kansas facility, the BE-77 featured a distinctive T-tail, tubular steel fuselage, and bonded aluminum construction, a departure from Beech's traditional all-metal designs. Powered by a 115-horsepower Lycoming O-235 engine, the Skipper was designed for docile handling and forgiving stall characteristics, making it well-suited for ab-initio students. Despite its solid engineering and the Beechcraft name, the Skipper struggled commercially against entrenched competitors and was discontinued after just three years, with only 312 aircraft produced between 1979 and 1981. Today the type remains a niche favorite among flight schools and private owners who appreciate its roomy cockpit, good visibility, and relatively benign flight characteristics.
