British Aerospace Bae 146 -200

Quad Jet· 11 globally registered

The British Aerospace 146-200 is a high-wing regional jet distinguished by its four Lycoming ALF 502 turbofans and exceptional short-field performance, making it one of the quietest commercial jets ever built and uniquely suited to steep-approach airports like London City. Introduced in 1983 as the stretched variant of the original BAe 146-100, the -200 seats 85-100 passengers and became the backbone of European regional operations throughout the 1980s and 1990s, earning the nickname "Whisperjet" for its remarkably low noise signature. The type's four engines provide redundancy and allow operation from unpaved or high-altitude airfields that twin-jets cannot safely serve, while its airbrake-equipped wing enables steep 5.5-degree approaches without thrust reversers. Beyond its original passenger role, the BAe 146 found a second career as an aerial firefighting platform, with companies like Neptune Aviation converting retired airframes into large air tankers capable of dropping 3,000 gallons of retardant. These fire-tanker conversions retain the type's excellent low-speed handling and short-field capability, making them ideal for operating from remote mountain airstrips near active wildfires. The aircraft's 1,700-nautical-mile range and 31,000-foot service ceiling remain competitive for regional missions, though production ended in 2003 as newer twin-engine designs captured the market. SkyMeter has tracked 105 flights across 8 airframes and 3 operators, with NEPTUNE AVIATION SERVICES INC the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
