Boeing 737 Max 7

Twin Jet· 7 globally registered

The Boeing 737 MAX 7 is the smallest member of Boeing's fourth-generation 737 family, designed to replace the 737-700 with significantly improved fuel efficiency and range. Launched in 2013 alongside its MAX siblings, the -7 features CFM International LEAP-1B engines, split-tip winglets, and advanced flight deck systems that deliver approximately 18% better fuel economy per seat than the aircraft it replaces. Despite being the first MAX variant offered for sale, it became the last to enter service due to the fleet-wide grounding following two fatal accidents in 2018-2019, with certification finally achieved in 2023 after extensive design changes to the MCAS flight control system. With seating for 138-153 passengers in typical two-class layouts and a maximum range of 3,850 nautical miles, the MAX 7 targets routes where the larger MAX 8 would be oversized but where operators want commonality across their narrowbody fleet. The type's performance envelope includes a maximum operating speed of 340 knots IAS or Mach 0.79, a service ceiling of 41,000 feet, and approach speeds around 133 knots depending on weight and configuration. Its relatively modest maximum takeoff weight of 177,000 pounds allows it to operate from shorter runways and into airports with weight restrictions that challenge heavier variants. Sales of the MAX 7 have been modest compared to the dominant MAX 8, with fewer than 200 firm orders as of late 2024. WestJet became the launch customer for the type in Canada, taking delivery of its first aircraft in early 2024, while United Airlines operates the variant in the United States. The MAX 7's future remains somewhat uncertain as Boeing has proposed the MAX 7FS (Further Simplified) variant and some customers have converted orders to the larger MAX 8 or MAX 10, but the type fills a specific niche for operators requiring 737 commonality with lower capacity requirements. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators over routes, with the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
